I asked Josh about this directly as I made my character. I will include my question His answer and my take on it. If I am incorrect, please correct me but as it's the only answer from Josh as of yet I'm going to assume it's the correct one until I hear from a DM.

I am a little unclear on the way exactly the leadership thing works. I know how to determine the leadership score and such. But one thing I can't find in the "leadership information" is whether you get Cohorts AND followers or if you choose Cohorts OR followers. I can get to the yahoo sight, but all of the posts are gone. There was an example there I looked at but wasn't going to delve into until I got to that stage.

Bill, thanks for the organization. As for Leadership, you get followers or cohorts per time taken.
[Sum-up]
If you have a leadership of 16, you can take followers OR Cohorts for a single use of leadership.
If you take followers you get (per DMG)
25: 1st Level Characters
2: 2nd Level Characters
1: 3rd Level Character.
If you take Cohorts you get (per house rules)
Any number of followers you like as long as their total levels don't exceed your leadership score. No cohort can be any higher level that one level below you.
Thus you could have an 8 AND a 7 or 4: Level 4s... or any combination of 16 (with one no higher than 8).
Additionally, you can not have more than one cohort also with the leadership feat unless you have the entourage feat. Leadership can not be purchased unless you're level 6.
If you have two level 6+ cohorts each with leadership and your character has the entourage feat you could gain followers OR cohorts for each of your leadership enabled cohorts. (your cohort level will be at least one level less than yourself and have less starting cash)
With the religious leadership package you gain the leadership feat twice for free. Thus you could use one for Cohorts and one for followers OR Two for Cohorts OR Two for followers.
If you have a cohort who also has leadership he can have EITHER followers OR cohorts.
For example. If you have a 16 leadership AND entourage
You could get Cohorts of 7/6/3.
Both your Cohorts higher than level 6 have leadership as well (leadership of 15 each)
For your second leadership feat you could gain followers:
25: level 1
2: Level 2
1: Level 3.
Your first Cohort could gain Cohorts of 6/6/3
Your second could gain followers:
20: Level 1
2: Level 2
1: Level 3
Totaling:
45: 1st Level characters (25 for your main character and 20 for your level 6 cohort with leadership)
4: 2nd level characters (2 for both your main and 6th level cohort)
2: 3rd level characters (1 for both your main and 6th level cohort)
You would also have:
1: 7th level Cohort
1: 6th Level Cohort
1: 3rd Level Cohort
Your 8th level Cohort has Cohorts of his own giving you
2: 6th level Cohorts
1: 3rd level Cohort
Grand Total:
45: 1st Level
4: 2nd level
4: 3rd level
3: 6th level
1: 7th level
Hope that helps
